Montenegro, the most scenic and pollution-free region of Europe, is situated on the Balkan Peninsula. It is an amazing country of contrasts and natural beauty: pure azure water of the Adriatic Sea, beautiful beaches, crystal-clear rivers and lakes. Montenegro is often referred to as the country of canyons. In the state, there are all conditions for any sport activity: in winter or in summer, in any district of the country, you can find any activity that is interesting for you. Hospitable and generous Montenegrins will make you feel at home.

The main heritage of Montenegro is its unique nature and wonderful climate. Varied relief is a feature of this country. Montenegro is famous for its beautiful national parks. Durmitor, Prokletije, Lovćen and other parks fascinate with their virgin nature. Mt Biograd National Park is the oldest in the country. The virgin forest, one of very few in Europe, where the age of trees reaches 1000 years, has been remained on its territory. The real treasure of these places is Lake Biograd with its crystal clear water. If you are fond of religious tourism, you are well advised to take an excursion to Biograd Mount that starts from Morača Monastery, the most famous Orthodox monastery in Montenegro.

The history of Montenegro began in the 1st millennium AD. In the Viking Age, the Balkans was settled by the Slavs, who later were Christianised. They created the State of Duklja on the territory of modern Montenegro. In 1042, the State of Duklja entered into an alliance with the Byzantine Empire. In the 11th century, the Principality of Zeta appeared on the Balkans. The whole history of Montenegro is penetrated by conflicts for independence. For many centuries, this country has been under influence of other states, and in 2006 Montenegro became an independent state.

History and religion have always been inextricably intertwined in Montenegro, thus in any region of the country, you can see monasteries and churches, well known for miraculous effects of icons. Thousands of pilgrims visit Ostrog Monastery each year. Besides, two great shrines are located here: the right hand of St John the Baptist and the piece of the Vivifying Cross, on which Jesus was crucified. St Elias Church is the highest temple in Europe as it is located on 1800 metres above sea level.

The sea is one more feature of this country. The coast line of Montenegro stretches on 290km. There you can find hundreds of beautiful and various beaches. Almost all of them are located in cosy, protected from waves and wind bays between rocks. Here you can find stony, sandy and gravel beaches that have preserved their virgin nature. They have been well equipped as well. And artificial beaches are located mostly in Herceg Novi, Tivat, Bar and Igalo. Breach season runs from May to October and water warms up to 26C.

Budva is the most ancient and beautiful town of the Adriatic coast, where the fortress gates, walls and churches ofthe 9th-15th centuries have been preserved till present days. Sveti Nikola Island, often called “Hawaii” by Montenegrins, is located not far from this town. It is the most popular vacation place in the country. The small town of Sveti Stefan, located on the small peninsula, is popular as well. Harmonious combination of the most magnificent villas and boarding houses with old temples of the 16th-19th centuries can be noted by you there.
